Valley Animals by Firestone, Brooks Edition , 0

Valley Animals by Firestone, Brooks Edition , 0

$21.99

Twenty-five years in the making, this book is a collection of true stories about the animals and the people of California's Santa Ynez Valley, in the heart of wine country, farm country, and animal country. The animals Brooks Firestone and his neighbors have lived with, worked with, played with, and otherwise associated with include horses, cattle, dog, cats, elands, alpacas, bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, deer, ostriches, parrots, geese, ducks, and even an Elephant at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. This book is a tribute to a beautiful valley, with all its landscape in both town and country. Most of all, it is a celebration of that magic that happens when human beings and their animal neighbors interact.

Los Olivos by Norris, Jim Edition , 0

Los Olivos by Norris, Jim Edition , 0

$20.99

Los Olivos was named for central Santa Barbara County wine country’s other small fruit. The local fascination for vineyards is fairly new, but Los Olivos has thrived as a community since not long after Native American days. Los Olivos grew important enough to local trade and travel to become the inland terminus of the narrow-gauge Pacific Coast Railway, which zigzagged southeasterly from Avila Beach. The town was platted in 1887 by the West Coast Land Company and the railroad’s owners. The dry-farming of grain and cattle ranches eventually drove the local economy in the surrounding Santa Ynez River Valley. Today Los Olivos thrives as a way station and gateway for tourists enjoying the beauty of the valley, the Santa Ynez Mountains, Los Padres National Forest, and nearby attractions, including the Mission Santa Ines, wineries, Solvang, and Santa Barbara.

Santa Clarita Valley by Boston, John; Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society Edition ILL, 0

$22.49

A trade crossroads dating back to Native American times, Santa Clarita may be relatively new in the story of Los Angeles County's suburban sprawl, but old-timers also recall it as the Navel of the Universe. A Chinese general once declared the Santa Clarita Valley one of the top 10 military targets on Earth. Located east of the Ventura County line where the valley creates a break in the Angeles National Forest, Santa Clarita has been home to cowboys, movie stars, farmers, and pistol fighters. With a diverse population of 250,000 today, the Santa Clarita Valley still boasts an eclectic heritage. The West's first major oil refinery is located here. The ground was bloodied by at least 21 deaths in one of America's last and greatest range wars. And local lore has maintained that the world's largest grizzly bear, weighing more than a ton, was shot here.

Santa Susana by Appleton, Bill Simi Valley Historical Society Edition , 0

Santa Susana by Appleton, Bill Simi Valley Historical Society Edition , 0

$22.49

Santa Susana is one of three rural towns in Simi Valley that began at the turn of the 20th century. The town derives its name from the surrounding mountains, Sierra de Santa Susanna, and grew up alongside the railroad depot built by the Southern Pacific Company in 1903. The history of Santa Susana can be traced back to the Chumash Indian village of Taaapu and a Spanish land grant, El Rancho Simi. The area was first surveyed by the Simi Valley Land and Water Company in 1887 for the sale of ranches. By the mid-1950s, Santa Susana had become a recognized agricultural center, noted for citrus and walnut production. Corriganville and Bottle Village are unique tourist destinations that originated near the Santa Susana Airport. In the surrounding mountains, quirky religious groups established communes away from the public with strange names and stories: Pisgah Grande, The Great Eleven Club, and WKFL Fountain of the World.

Santa Maria Valley by Montoya, Carina Monica Edition ILL,

Santa Maria Valley by Montoya, Carina Monica Edition ILL,

$22.49

Located in the heart of California's central coast, the Santa Maria Valley covers an area of mountains and hills that reaches the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara County. The valley's early history dates back to the Portola Expedition, which passed through Santa Maria on the California Mission Trail–called El Camino Real–and ended near Monterey Bay. When early settlers arrived, the valley was dry and desolate. Nearby water sources, however, helped transform the land into one of the most fertile and beautiful valleys in California. The valley became a leader in innovative agriculture transport, a depot on the busiest short-line railroad system in the country, and a training ground for many World War II pilots at its renowned aeronautic college. Today, its landscape of richly colored agricultural fields is framed by rolling hills and scenic miles of grapevines that produce some of the world's most coveted wines. The valley is also famous for its Santa Maria-style barbecue.

Italians in the Santa Clara Valley by Marrazzo, Frederick W. Edition ILL, 0

Italians in the Santa Clara Valley by Marrazzo, Frederick W. Edition ILL, 0

$25.49

Attracted by the mild climate and abundance of fertile land, Italians came to the Santa Clara Valley from all regions of Italy, including Sicily, Calabria, Basilicata, Tuscany, and Piedmont. Beginning in the 1880s, the Eden of the World beckoned Italian immigrants as farmers, ranchers, orchardists, vegetable growers, and winemakers. Italian men, women, and children filled the numerous canneries and packinghouses supplying the rest of the nation with fresh produce. Once the largest ethnic group in the valley, Italians' impact on the region has been profound, yet is often overlooked. The photographs in this book present a special glimpse into the lives of a people whose irrepressible optimism, kindness, and can-do spirit overcame the challenges and obstacles put before them.

Dragboats of the 1960s Photo Archive

$32.95

The time has come to chronicle “the Rebel Decade.” This was the birth of “whip-start” dragsters which led to today’s organized drag boat racing. Recognized and featured are those racing legends who reigned in the heyday of hot boat builders, drivers and crew. Acknowledged are those mavericks who dared to mix unleashed speed-on-the-water with smoke and fire, thunderous nitro or powerful blown gas while avoiding the moment when their boat could take a deadly spin, nose dive or flight—many failed. Drag Boats of the 1960s Photo Archive is a team effort by many of those who were there; only they could have created this riveting history on the fastest, most exciting and dangerous era in water sports.Don Edwards is owner and driver of the 1967 World’s Winningest Gas Hydro drag boat Golden Komotion. Through the years he has never lost his enthusiasm and friendship of those he knew during his racing years. Today he enjoys coordinating racers reunions and boat shows in California as well as restoring an original Hallett wood drag hydro. Don lives with his wife, Lydia, in the Santa Ynez Valley, California.Barry McCown, owner and driver of the sensational award winning BANZAI drag hydro in which he held the quarter mile blown fueler record in 1963.
