Excerpt: Saint Nicholas (Greek: , Agios Nikolaos ) (270 – 6 December 346) is the canonical and most popular name for Nicholas of Myra, a saint and Greek Bishop of Myra (Demre, in Lycia, part of modern-day Turkey). Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose English name comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas. His reputation evolved among the faithful, as is common for early Christian saints. In 1087, his relics were furtively translated to Bari, in southeastern Italy; for this reason, he is also known as, Nicholas of Bari. The historical Saint Nicholas is remembered and revered among Catholic and Orthodox Christians. He is also honoured by various Anglican and Lutheran churches. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, thieves, and child… More: |

A Christmas Sampler: Sweet, Funny, and Strange Holiday Tales, is a compilation of twenty-three Christmas stories commissioned by the Bethlehem Writers Group to capture all of Christmas’s myriad possibilities.Paul Weidknecht’s “Those Things Remembered” is about a long-time mall Santa who realizes he has forgotten a child’s name. Murphy explores that moment in a relationship when one partner is ready for marriage, and the other seems not to notice. This premier anthology also features stories by Jeff Baird, Carol A. Hanzl Birkas, Cindy Kelly, Jerome W. McFadden, Stanley W. McFarland, Sally Wyman Paradysz, Jo Ann Schaffer, and Will Wright. A Sappho of Green Springs $1.99 Collection of western stories, including: A Sappho of Green Springs, The Chatelaine of Burnt Ridge, Through the Santa Clara Wheat, and A Maecenas of the Pacific Slope. According to Wikipedia: “Bret Harte (August 25, 1836- May 6, 1902) was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. He was born in Albany, New York. … He moved to California in 1853, later working there in a number of capacities, including miner, teacher, messenger, and journalist. He spent part of his life in the northern California coast town now known as Arcata, then just a mining camp on Humboldt Bay. His first literary efforts, including poetry and prose, appeared in The Californian, an early literary journal edited by Charles Henry Webb. In 1868 he became editor of The Overland Monthly, another new literary magazine, but this one more in tune with the pioneering spirit of excitement in California. His story, “The Luck of Roaring Camp,” appeared in the magazine’s second edition, propelling Harte to nationwide fame… Determined to pursue his literary career, in 1871 he and his family traveled back East, to New York and eventually to Boston, where he contracted with the publisher of The Atlantic Monthly for an annual salary of $10,000, “an unprecedented sum at the time.” His popularity waned, however, and by the end of 1872 he was without a publishing contract and increasingly desperate. He spent the next few years struggling to publish new work (or republish old), delivering lectures about the gold rush, and even selling an advertising jingle to a soap company. In 1878 Harte was appointed to the position of United States Consul in the town of Krefeld,Germany and then to Glasgow in 1880. In 1885 he settled in London. During the thirty years he spent in Europe, he never abandoned writing, and maintained a prodigious output of stories that retained the freshness of his earlier work. Calling On The Name Of Jesus $9.99 My name is Kenneth Dewayne George, but everyone calls meKenny G. I was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 6, 1968 tothe parents of Carl, and Felicia George. They were very youngwhen they had me. My story begins when I was eight years old,and I had two other siblings under me. My sister Angela was sixyears old, and my brother Mark was four years old. We grew upin a Christian home. Our father was a cab driver, and a evangelistwho always provided for his family, and our Mother was a lovingand devoted homemaker, and she also was our teacher. We werehomeschooled because we travel a lot; our parents felt it was bestfor us to be homeschooled. Going to church and serving God wasa way of life in the George family home. At the age of eight yearsold, I accepted the Lord as my personal Savior. But I wasn’t sureif God was real or someone people made up. One day I began towonder if God or Jesus was real, or were they just Fairy Tales, likethe Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus. One day I startedto ask myself, Is God real? How can I find out? The only answerI could come up with was to ask God himself. I figured if he wasreal he would tell me or show me. If he wasn’t real, then he won’tsay a word, and I would know for myself. This was the questionthat was in my mind. That night before I went to bed, I got on myknees and asked God if he was real. I waited patiently expectingan answer, But there was none. After about fifteen minutes, Icrawled into my bed and went to sleep. The next morning I got up,washed my face, and brushed my teeth. I remembered the questionI asked the night before concerning if God or Jesus was real. Thatmorning I came to the conclusion that he was just a character, somebody with a vivid imagination made up. So I thought when Iturned eighteen, I will tell my parents, I do not believe in this Godthey talk |

Cherokee Outlet Cowboy $19.95 At age fifteen, Laban Samuel Records (1856-1940), the youngest of twelve children, moved west with his family from Indiana to Kansas. About sixty-six years later, writing in pencil on Big Chief tablets, he remembered this move and his other western experiences through the year 1892, when he settled with his wife and children on the claim he had staked in the Cheyenne-Arapaho Run. In the intervening years, Laban was a freighter with his brother on the Santa Fe Trail and a cowpuncher in the Dodge City stockyards. He first encountered Indians on the banks of the Verdigris River in southern Kansas, learned the Osage language, and became an agency cook at Pawhuska. Later he worked in the Cherokee Outlet as a line rider for the T-5 and Spade ranches, eventually becoming a foreman. Because of Laban’s firsthand knowledge of people and events, his account adds a new perspective to several infamous episodes. For example, he barely escaped the raid by Dull Knife and other Cheyenne warriors in 1878, and he knew the participants in the Medicine Lodge bank robbery, the Talbot raid at Caldwell, and the Potts-Franklin shootout on the T-5 Ranch. In addition, Laban recounted many affectionate and often humorous stories about Outlet ranchers such as Maj. Andrew Drumm, Outlet cowpunchers such as Charlie Siringo, Texas trail drivers such as Shanghai Pierce, and western writers such as Thomas McNeal of the Medicine Lodge Cresset, Scott Cummings (the Pilgrim Bard ), and Pawnee Bill. But perhaps most memorable are Laban’s stories of everyday cowboy life: herding cattle with his dog Shep, riding his favorite horses, and surviving the rigors encountered by everyone on the western range – tornadoes, rattlesnakes, cold and snow, outlaws, and hard work. |
