(As a matter of fact, Tavares’s More Than A Woman and The Trammps Disco Inferno have their origins on the wildly successful Saturday Night Fever soundtrack). Despite all the glitz and excess associated with this musical trend, this anthology demonstrates how much of a populist movement disco was. Working stiffs (Rose Royce’s Car Wash ), gay culture (Village People’s Macho Man ), feminists (Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive ) and the 1979 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates (Sister Sledge’s We Are Family ) all wound up with anthems. Other artists like Amii Stewart ( Knock On Wood ) and Thelma Houston ( Don’t Leave Me This Way ) successfully resurrected older nuggets and turned them into dance-friendly baubles.
