Excerpt: West Virginia ( ) is a state in the Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, and Pennsylvania and Maryland to the northeast. Excerpt: Nevada is a state located in the western region of the United States. The capital is Carson City and the largest city is Las Vegas. The state’s nickname is Silver State, due to the large number of silver deposits that were discovered and mined there. “Sagebrush State” and “Battle Born State” are its alternative nicknames. In 1864, Nevada became the 36th state to enter the union, and the phrase “Battle Born” on the state flag reflects the state’s entry on the Union side during the American Civil War. Its first nonnative settlement was called Mormon Station. Nevada is the seventh-largest state in area, and geographically covers the Mojave Desert in the south to the Great Basin in the north. It is the most arid state in the Union. Approximately 86% of the state’s land is owned by the U.S federal government under various jurisdictions both civilian and military. Excerpt: Bourbon Democrat was a term used in the United States from 1876 to 1904 to refer to a conservative or classical liberal member of the Democratic Party , especially one who supported President Grover Cleveland in 18841888/1892-1896 and Alton B. Parker in 1904. After 1904, the Bourbons faded away. Woodrow Wilson , who had been a Bourbon, came to terms with William Jennings Bryan in 1912. The terms was used mostly by critics who complained of old fashioned viewpoints. Bourbon Democrats represented business interests, supported banking and railroad goals (but opposed subsidizing banks, railroads or other enterprises – or protecting them from competition), promoted laissez-faire capitalism (which included opposition to the protectionism Republicans then advocated), opposed imperialism and U.S. overseas expansion, fought for the gold standard , and opposed bimetallism . They strongly supported reform movements such as Civil Service Reform and opposed corruption of city bosses , leading the fight against the Tweed Ring . The anti-corruption theme earned the votes of many Republican Mugwumps in 1884. Origins of the term The term was first used as a pun to refer both to bourbon whiskey from Kentucky and even more to the Bourbon Dynasty of France that was overthrown in the French Revolution , but returned to power in 1815 to rule in a reactionary fashion until its final overthrow in the July Revolution of 1830. 1906 Novels: The Jungle (Study Guide) $21.24 Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: The Jungle. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Jungle is a 1906 novel written by author and journalist Upton Sinclair. Sinclair wrote the novel to highlight the plight of the working class and to remove from obscurity the corruption of the American meatpacking industry during the early-20th century. The novel depicts in harsh tones the poverty, absence of social programs, unpleasant living and working conditions, and hopelessness prevalent among the working class, which is contrasted with the deeply-rooted corruption on the part of those in power. Sinclair’s observations of the state of turn-of-the-century labor were placed front and center for the American public to see, suggesting that something needed to be changed to get rid of American “wage slavery”. The novel is also an important example of the “muckraking” tradition begun by journalists such as Jacob Riis. Upton Sinclair came to Chicago with the intent of writing The Jungle; he had been given a stipend by the socialist newspaper The Appeal to Reason. Upon his arrival in the lobby of the Chicago Transit House, a hotel near the stockyards, he was quoted as saying, “Hello! I’m Upton Sinclair, and I’m here to write the Uncle Tom’s Cabin of the Labor Movement!”. He rented living quarters and immediately immersed himself in the city by walking its streets, talking to its people and taking pictures. One Sunday afternoon, he worked his way into a group of Lithuanian immigrants getting together for a wedding party, “Behold, there was the opening scene of my story, a gift from the gods”. He was welcomed to the festivities and stayed until two o’clock in the morning. The novel was first published in serial form in 1905. “After five rejections”, its first edition as a novel was published by |

He had first been elected at the 1931 general election.During World War II , the major parties had agreed an electoral pact under which they would not contest by-elections in seats held by their respective parties, and as a result many wartime by-elections resulting in a candidate being returned unopposed. However, other parties and independent politicians were free to field candidates.Initially there were six candidates but the independent labour and liberal candidates withdrew leaving Walter Padley for the Independent Labour Party (ILP), Edward Godfrey who sought election as an ‘English Nationalist’ candidate, Independent Dorothy Crisp who wrote for the Sunday Dispatch and the official Conservative candidate Henry Longhurst .During the war Walter Padley had been a conscientious objector . In 1950 he was elected Labour Party MP for Ogmore and served until 1979.Godfrey was founder of the English National Association , an organisation with alleged Fascist leanings. The by-election was held on an electoral roll which had not been updated since 1937.Votes See also (online edition) A hyperlinked version of this chapter |
