The attack has been attributed to the neo-fascist terrorist organization, Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari , and connected to the EU-investigated Operation Gladio .Bombing and investigation At 10:25 a.m., a timed improvised explosive device (IED) contained in an unattended suitcase detonated inside an air-conditioned waiting room, which, the month being August (and with air conditioning being uncommon in Italy at the time), was crammed full of people. The IED was made of TNT , T4 and a “Compound B”, also known as Composition B . The explosion destroyed most of the main building and hit the Ancona Chiasso train that was waiting at the first platform. The blast was heard for miles. The roof of the waiting room collapsed onto the passengers, which greatly increased the total number killed in the terrorist attack.On that summer Saturday the station was full of tourists and the city was unprepared for such a massive incident. There were not enough ambulances, so buses and taxis were used to transport wounded victims to hospitals.The attack was recorded as the worst atrocity in Italy since WWII . It’s a pity so few stay longer because there are numerous interesting ruins within a day’s journey, the local museum and botanical gardens are good and the Lagoon of Seven Colors is just 20 miles (37 km) from the town center. Bacalar Lagoon, the second-largest in Mexico, is about the same distance away. Just offshore are the Chinchorro reefs, known for their rusting shipwrecks. If you’re interested in some of these things, away from the party scene of Cancún and adjacent communities, then I encourage you to stay longer. Chetumal in Mayan means “a place with lots of red cedar” and the Maya populated the Chetumal and Balcalar Lagoon area for a few hundred years.
