Especially when everyone then breaks into song! Of course, that’s the other delightf…

Photographer and science writer Wayne Lynch has dedicated more than a decade of his life to learning everything he can about these powerful mammals. In his quest for bears, he has crawled inside the winter dens of black bears and polar bears, held squirming grizzly cubs in his arms, sailed along the coastal rainforests of British Columbia, hiked the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains in South America and ridden elephants through the jungles of Nepal and India. In Bears, Bears, Bears, his engaging guide to the world's eight bear species, Lynch introduces us to the strange and wonderful natural histories of these magnificent wild animals.

Party Animals by Hofler, Robert Edition ILL, 1

Party Animals by Hofler, Robert Edition ILL, 1

$13.49

Allan Carr was Hollywood’s premier party-thrower during the town’s most hedonistic era—the cocaine-addled, sexually indulgent 1970s. Hosting outrageous soirees with names like the Mick Jagger/Cycle Sluts Party and masterminding such lavishly themed opening nights as the Tommy/New York City subway premiere, it was Carr, an obese, caftan-wearing producer—the ultimate outsider—who first brought movie stars and rock stars, gays and straights, Old and New Hollywood together. From the stunning success of Grease and La Cage aux Folles to the spectacular failure of the Village People’s Can’t Stop the Music, as a producer Carr’s was a rollercoaster of a career punctuated by major hits and phenomenal flops—none more disastrous than the Academy Awards show he produced featuring a tone-deaf Rob Lowe serenading Snow White, a fiasco that made Carr an outcast, and is still widely considered to be the worst Oscars ever. Tracing Carr’s excess-laden rise and tragic fall—and sparing no one along the way—Party Animals provides a sizzling, candid, behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood’s most infamous period.

A Crash of Rhinos, a Party of Jays

A madcap menagerie of animal group names. They say that birds of a feather flock together. But who knew that bears in a group are called a sleuth? Eagle-eyed author Diane Swanson knew. In a book that’s both funny and fascinating, Swanson explores 11 animals and the collective nouns that describe them. Many terms are a perfect fit. A leap of leopards certainly evokes images of these acrobatic cats. And you can’t help but look up to a tower of giraffes. But would you have guessed that many pheasants make up a bouquet? Other animal groupings include: An army of caterpillars A pride of lions A bed of clams A raft of ducks A gang of elk Each playful profile reveals a term’s origins and describes the behavior and characteristics of the animal. Meanwhile, delightful illustrations capture the literal connection to each intriguing name. A Crash of Rhinos, A Party of Jays is sure to intrigue young animal enthusiasts and budding language lovers alike.

Snow Shoes and Canoes, The Early Days of a Fur-Trader in the Hudson Bay Territory

Snow Shoes and Canoes, The Early Days of a Fur-Trader in the Hudson Bay Territory

$0.99

The basic story-line is that there is a fort in the Hudson Bay Territory that needs some stores and materials to be sent to it from another fort about 150 miles away. The journey could be done by canoe, but there are none available at this time. So a party of people are sent overland to fetch what is required. There are encounters with bears and other dangerous animals; there aretimes when they are very hungry and very tired. They encounter both friendly and unfriendly Indians. They borrow canoes at one stage, and have wrecks in the mighty rapids. There are strong overtones indicating that Kingston has read the authentic books by Ballantyne, who had worked in the Hudson Bay Company, and whose letters home had set off his literary career. But Kingston has a unique style of his own, and he was good at research, so he can be forgiven for using valuable authentic material to help him get his facts right, and make his story credible. According to Wikipedia: “William Henry Giles Kingston (28 February 1814 – 5 August 1880), writer of tales for boys, was born in London, but spent much of his youth in Oporto, where his father was a merchant. His first book, The Circassian Chief, appeared in 1844. His first book for boys, Peter the Whaler, was published in 1851, and had such success that he retired from business and devoted himself entirely to the production of this kind of literature, in which his popularity was deservedly great; and during 30 years he wrote upwards of 130 tales, including The Three Midshipmen (1862), The Three Lieutenants (1874), The Three Commanders (1875), The Three Admirals (1877), Digby Heathcote, etc. He also conducted various papers, including The Colonist, and Colonial Magazine and East India Review. He was also interested in emigration, volunteering, and various philanthropic schemes. For services in negotiating a commercial treaty with Portugal he received a Portuguese knighthood, and for his literary labours a Government pen
