Excerpt: Detox is the upcoming third and final studio album by American hip hop artist Dr. Dre, set to be released in 2010 on Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. It was originally due for a 2004 release, but was not completed because Dr. Dre wanted to concentrate on producing for artists that were on his Aftermath Entertainment record label, the album is slated for a 2010 release. Dr. Dre has stated that this will be his final album. Work for the album dates back to early 2003, but later in that year he decided to stop working on the album to focus on producing for other artists. The album had initially been set for a fall 2005 release. On February 18, 2007, Dr. Dre revealed to Power 106 radio station that he had completed eighteen potential tracks for the album. He plans to have twelve or thirteen songs in the final version, with each one being a single. He also announced that the introductory track is titled “Intervention”. However, Bishop Lamont stated that the album will include more than thirteen tracks. In an interview, 50 Cent was asked about Detox, in which he spoke of his collaborations and Dr. Dre’s progress, stating: On September 9, 2007, before presenting the award for Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards, Dr. Dre stated that Detox will be released. Dre later revealed to Hillary Crosley of Billboard magazine that Detox would be his final album. In February 2008, Bishop Lamont also announced a second “Up in Smoke Tour” to begin shortly after the album. In May 2008, AllHipHop.com reported that rumors spread about Detox being completed. That same month, Detox and Eminem’s new studio album were revealed to be released for the fourth quarter of 2008. In an interview with Defsounds, Lloyd Banks and Tony Y… More:

Decline and Fall of the British Empire, 1781-1997

Decline and Fall of the British Empire, 1781-1997

$15.99

A magisterial work of narrative history, hailed in Britain as “the best one-volume account of the British Empire” and “an outstanding book” (The Times Literary Supplement). After the American Revolution, the British Empire appeared to be doomed. But over the next 150 years it grew to become the greatest and most diverse empire the world has ever seen—ranging from Canada to Australia to China, India, and Egypt—seven times larger than the Roman Empire at its apogee. Britannia ruled the waves and a quarter of the earth.Yet it was also a fundamentally weak empire, as Piers Brendon shows in this vivid and sweeping chronicle. Run from a tiny island base, the British Empire operated on a shoestring with the help of local elites. It enshrined a belief in freedom that would fatally undermine its authority. Spread too thin, and facing wars, economic crises, and domestic discord, the empire would vanish almost as quickly as it appeared.Within a generation, the mighty structure collapsed, sometimes amid bloodshed. This rapid demise left unfinished business in Rhodesia, the Falklands, and Hong Kong. It left an array of dependencies and a ghost of an empire overshadowed by a rising America. Above all, it left a contested legacy: at best, a sporting spirit, a legal code, and a near-universal language; at worst, failed states and internecine strife.Brendon tells this story with brio and brilliance; covering a vast canvas, he fills it with vivid firsthand accounts of life in the colonies and intimate portraits of the sometimes eccentric British officials who administered them. It is all here—from brief lives to telling anecdotes to comic episodes to symbolic moments. Panoramic in scope and riveting in detail, this is narrative history at its finest.

A secret government unit is formed under the oversight of Adam Harrison, famed paranormal investigator. The six members he’s gathered know a little of the otherworldly — each has honed a psychic talent of their own.Jackson Crow, part English, part Cheyenne, heads the group. Haunted by his experience with an ancestral ghost who saved his life as a child, and the recent murders of two previous teammates, Jackson can’t tell if Adam’s demoted him or given him an extraordinary opportunity. Despite his link to the realm of spirits, he’s well aware that the living commit the most heinous crimes, with spiritualist charlatans existing merely to fool and seduce the unwary. To counterbalance Jackson’s careful skepticism, Adam Harrison has paired him with Angela Hawkins, a young woman who learned the painful lesson of loss at an early age. A police officer utilizing her paranormal intuition in Virginia, she already has her hands full. But Adam’s call to New Orleans is strong. The case: In a historic mansion in New Orleans’ French Quarter, a senator’s wife falls to her death from a balcony. Most think she jumped, distraught over the loss of her young son. Some say she was pushed. And yet others believe she was beckoned by the ghostly spirits that inhabit the house — once the site of a serial killer’s grisly work.Whether supernatural or all too human, crimes of passion, greed and desire will cast the pair into danger of losing their lives… and their immortal souls.“Graham does a great job of blending just a bit of paranormal with real, human evil.”—Miami Herald“Graham wields a deftly sexy and convincing pen.”—Publishers Weekly“An incredible storyteller.”—Los Angeles Daily News
