The Ghost Handbook by Curran, Robert Edition , $19.99 Nearly everybody loves a good ghost story–and the best of them are tales that have some basis in fact. Author Robert Curran has compiled an impressive collection of just such stories–accounts of mysterious apparitions, haunted mansions, gloomy castles, and eerie cries in the night. For example, he tells the strange story of Matilda of England. In life she was the daughter of royalty, and was imprisoned in Mortemer Abbey, an edifice set in a gloomy French valley surrounded by dark, dense forests. Today, she is just one of several ghosts who haunt that abbey. Over the centuries, Matilda's ghost has been frequently seen walking in the abbey's corridors and gardens. Sometimes she is seen wearing black gloves, a sign that death will soon come to one of the local inhabitants. At other times she wears white gloves, which signify a wedding or a birth. From America's Deep South come yet more uncanny tales–for example, the haunted Hampton Plantation house in South Carolina, and the restless ghost of one of its owners, John Henry Routledge. He hanged himself after being rejected by his lover. These are just two among scores of chilling tales that will keep readers turning the pages of this handsome, color-illustrated book. |

Ghost Radio by Gout, Leopoldo Edition , 0 $13.99 Ghost Radio is a terrifying novel about a ghost-story call-in radio show that inadvertently opens a doorway into the paranormal, giving voice to the dead and instigating an epic battle for the souls of the livingFrom the cramped bowels of a dimly lit radio station, Ghost Radio is beamed onto the airwaves. More than a call-in show to tell scary stories about vampires and poltergeists, Ghost Radio is a sanctuary for those sleepless denizens of the night, lost halfway between this world and the next.Joaquin, the hip, melancholy host, sits deep in a fog of cigarette smoke, fielding calls from believers and detractors alike. He is joined in the booth by his darkly beautiful girlfriend, Alondra, and his engineer, Watts. Soon what began as an underground cult sensation is primed to break out to mainstream audiences. When a huge radio conglomerate offers to syndicate the show and Ghost Radio becomes a national hit with an expanding legion of hardcore fans, neither Joaquin, Alondra, nor Watts is remotely prepared for what is about to happen.Though a charismatic host, Joaquin remains a skeptic even as he begins to notice a curious and troubling phenomenon—he feels himself drawn further and further into the terrifying stories he solicits on the radio. Slowly he loses control over his reality and finds himself unable to distinguish between the real world and the world populated by the nightmares on Ghost Radio. He is forced to confront his past and his own mortality in order to save that which is most precious to him and repair the crumbling wall between the living and the dead. |

Ghost of Hoppers by Hernandez, Jaime Edition ILL, 0 $16.49 Ghost of Hoppers collects for the first time the new adventures of Maggie Chascarrillo, as serialized in the Love & Rockets comic book, and represents Jaime Hernandez’s much-anticipated follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2004 magnum opus Locas, which Entertainment Weekly gave an ‘A’ for its innovative technique and complex, character-driven stories about Mexican-American life.Ghost of Hoppers begins with the newly divorced Maggie now working as the resident building-manager of the notorious Capri Apartments deep in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, where imaginary dogs roam its walkways at night, all the air conditioners are broken, and the empty swimming pool is covered with flies. As if the eccentric, oddball tenants weren’t weird enough, Maggie’s houseguest and old friend Izzy Ortiz shakes things up with her usual nervous breakdowns, nocturnal screaming, and obsessive fly-swatting (sometimes with a knife!). When Izzy makes a guest appearance on a local cable access talk show to promote her book, Maggie meets the voluptuous Vivian the Frogmouth, a curvaceous, hapless bombshell with a foghorn voice who is despised by Hopey (Maggie’s long time on-again-off-again girlfriend, now a bartender sporting an eye patch after one of Vivian’s previous bottle-breaking altercations). Maggie finds herself swept up in Vivian’s life of random catfights, her mob-connected, knife-wielding stalker ex-boyfriend, and his violently jealous fiancee. Maggie and Vivian eventually strike up a reluctant and awkward romance, and when they set out for Hoppers to retrieve a stolen art object from Izzy, they get a lot more than they bargained for!About Jaime’s work, the New York Times wrote, These stories have all the visual smarts of film and the narrative smarts of literature. Hernandez specializes in psychological detail; we see both text and subtext immediately. What better than to open a book that shows there is more going on than we dream of in our workaday philosophies? |

For Student Series Short Stories: The Night the Ghost Got In by James Thurber $8.99 The Night the Ghost Got In is a prime example of the storytelling technique of James Thurber, who is widely considered one of the greatest humor writers that America ever produced. It was published in Thurber’s 1933 book My Life and Hard Times, a fictionalized account of his childhood in Columbus, Ohio. Like most of Thurber’s best works from that collection, the story combines events that are plausible with comic exaggeration and then adds responses that range from exaggeration to deadpan. The characters’ inappropriate understanding of their world serves the dual purposes of amusing readers while revealing to them the uneven balances of the human mind. The story centers on a common situation: the narrator (a first-person speaker, standing in for Thurber as a young man) hears a strange sound downstairs in the middle of the night. He assumes that it is a ghost, but his mother calls the police, who are thoroughly befuddled by the odd characters of the Thurber household and their way of life. By the time it is over, one of the policemen has been shot in the shoulder by the household’s senile grandfather, and a local news reporter, told that a ghost is the cause of all the commotion, is left speechless. Since it is a light comedy, there are no serious repercussions in this story, and in the end life goes on in the household just as it had before. My Life and Hard Times is still in print in paperback, more than seventy years after its first publication. This story is also included in the Library of America volume James Thurber: Writings and…. |

Ghost Stories in Late Renaissance France : Walking by Night by Timothy Chesters Edition , $38.5 Caught in the grip of savage religious war, fear of sorcery and the devil, and a deepening crisis of epistemological uncertainty, the intellectual climate of late Renaissance France (c. 1550-1610) was one of the most haunted in European history. Although existing studies of this climate have been attentive to the extensive body of writing on witchcraft and demons, they have had little to say of its ghosts. Combining techniques of literary criticism, intellectual history, and thehistory of the book, this study examines a large and hitherto unexplored corpus of ghost stories in late Renaissance French writing. These are shown to have arisen in a range of contexts far broader than was previously thought: whether in Protestant polemic against the doctrine of purgatory, humanistdiscussions of friendship, the growing ethnographic consciousness of New World ghost beliefs, or courtroom wrangles over haunted property. Chesters describes how, over the course of this period, we also begin to see emerge characteristics recognisable from modern ghost tales: the setting of the ‘haunted house’, the eroticised ghost, or the embodied revenant. Taking in prominent literary figures including Rabelais, Ronsard, Montaigne, d’Aubign–eacute–;, as well as forgotten demonological tractsand sensationalist pamphlets, Ghost Stories in Late Renaissance France sheds new light on the beliefs, fears, and desires of a period on the threshold of modernity. It will be of interest to any scholar or student working in the field of early modern European history, literature or thought. |
