This is another collection of Disney shorts set to music, but this time the formula works. That’s predicated on the inherent strength of the individual pieces and almost all of them come through. Surprisingly, two American folk heroes, Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill, are the stars of this show, with rousty little tunes, humor, and compelling linear story lines (a rarity in most of these shorts). …

Emma Thompson scores a double bull’s-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters–the one with “sense”–she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen’s tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pr…

The Golden Christmas Tree by Wahl, Jan; Weisgard, Leonard Edition ILL, 0

$16.49

From the Golden Books archives comes a classic Christmas tale by a master storyteller and one of the great Golden Books illustrators.A forest is hushed for the animals’ Christmas. The elephant brings a fir tree from far away, and the animals gather silently. . . . The kangaroos decorate the tree with pinecones, and the giraffe places a star at the top.“Now, as it happened before, the lion lay down with the lamb. . . .”This beautifully told story by noted author Jan Wahl is brought to life with richly textured paintings by Caldecott Medalist Leonard Weisgard, celebrating the majesty and wonder of Christmas. It was originally published in 1988.

Auszug: Leopold Kohr (5 October 1909 in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria – 26 February 1994 in Gloucester, England) was an economist, jurist and political scientist known both for his opposition to the “cult of bigness” in social organization and as one of those who inspired the small is beautiful movement. For almost twenty years he was Professor of Economics and Public Administration at the University of Puerto Rico. He described himself as a “philosophical anarchist.” His most influential work was The Breakdown of Nations. Leopold Kohr’s best known bookKohr grew up in the small town of Oberndorf near Salzburg, and it remained his ideal of community. He often commented on the fact that the Christmas carol “Silent Night” was written and composed as “Stille Nacht” in his home village. He obtained doctorate degrees in law at the University of Innsbruck in Austria and political science at the University of Vienna. He also studied economics and political theory at the London School of Economics. In 1937 Kohr became a freelance correspondent during the Spanish Civil War, where he was impressed by the limited, self-contained governments of the separatist states of Catalonia and Aragon, as well as the small Spanish anarchist city states of Alcoy and Caspe. He became close friends with journalist George Orwell and shared offices with correspondents Ernest Hemingway and André Malraux. Kohr fled Austria in 1938 after it was annexed by Nazi

Let them rest for ever silent amidst that music in the memory which is felt, not heard—its blessing mute though breathing, like an inarticulate prayer I” CHAPTER H. GLASGOW COLLEGE. 1797-1803. ” Long, long, long ago, the time when we danced hand in hand with our golden-haired sister! Long, long, long ago, the day on which she died; the hour, so far more dismal than any hour that can now darken us on this earth, when her coffin descended slowly, slowly into the horrid clay, and we were borne, deathlike and wishing to die, out of the churchyard, that from that moment we thought we could never enter more.” That touching reminiscence of his golden-haired sister, which came back among the visions of a merry Christmas long after, points to what was probably John Wilson’s first deep experience of sorrow; and it is no imaginary picture of the scene it recalled. For even in those early years, and still more as life advanced, he was intensely susceptible to emotions of grief, as well as of gladness. A heavier trial awaited him at the threshold of the new life on which he was to enter after leaving the manse of Mearns in his twelfth year. He had seen the yellow leaves fall, on to the close of that last memorable autumn which finished his happy school-time, and now he was summoned home to see his father die. As he stood at the head of the grave, chief mourner, and heard the dull earth rattling over the coffin, his emotions so overcame him that he fell to the ground in a swoon, and had to be carried away. Such an effect, on a frame more than commonly robust, indicated a depth of feeling and passion not often seen in out clime among boys, or, in its outer

A Christmas Promise is the seventh in Perry’s holiday series, and it will surely bring joy to this special season.Three days before Christmas, in the freezing slums of London’s East End, thirteen-year-old Gracie Phipps encounters Minnie Maude Mudway, who is only eight, alone, and determined to find her friend Charlie. However Charlie is no ordinary companion: He is a donkey who belonged to Minnie Maude’s Uncle Alf. Gracie is shocked to learn that only the day before, someone brutally murdered Uncle Alf and made off with his rag-and-bones cart and the beloved beast who pulled it. Now, come hell or high water, Minnie Maude means to rescue Charlie–and Gracie decides to help. But the path that Uncle Alf had taken to his death was not his regular route, and in his cart were not just the usual bits of worn silver and china but also, the children are told, a dazzling golden box. What its contents may have been no one can say, for, like Charlie and the cart, it too has vanished.Uncertain where their four-legged friend may be, the children are drawn into an adult world far beyond their innocent imaginings. And in a shop gleaming with beautiful objects, they recruit an unexpected ally: Mr. Balthasar, who warns them that the shining prize may be a Pandora’s box of evil.Set in the Victorian world where Anne Perry reigns supreme, A Christmas Promise culminates in a radiant finale that will remain with you long after the final page is turned.

 A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story

$14.95

A beloved, bestselling classic of humorous and nostalgic Americana–the book that inspired the equally classic Yuletide film. The holiday film A Christmas Story, first released in 1983, has become a bona fide Christmas perennial, gaining in stature and fame with each succeeding year. Its affectionate, wacky, and wryly realistic portrayal of an American family’s typical Christmas joys and travails in small-town Depression-era Indiana has entered our imagination and our hearts with a force equal to It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. This edition of A Christmas Story gathers together in one hilarious volume the gems of autobiographical humor that Jean Shepherd drew upon to create this enduring film. Here is young Ralphie Parker’s shocking discovery that his decoder ring is really a device to promote Ovaltine; his mother and father’s pitched battle over the fate of a lascivious leg lamp; the unleashed and unnerving savagery of Ralphie’s duel in the show with the odious bullies Scut Farkas and Grover Dill; and, most crucially, Ralphie’s unstoppable campaign to get Santa–or anyone else–to give him a Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle. Who cares that the whole adult world is telling him, You’ll shoot your eye out, kid ? The pieces that comprise A Christmas Story, previously published in the larger collections In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash and Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories, coalesce in a magical fashion to become an irresistible piece of Americana, quite the equal of the film in its ability to warm the heart and tickle the funny bone.

And the room, too, was not much used; it was such a sad, sad room. They never entered it but they thought of him; and they never entered it but they walked lightly over the ground. The cheerful house that used to seem to look out for him when he was coming home, grew so, so melancholy. All holiday time was gone past. There would be no more bumping along the hall floor with his school-box, no more plunging up-stairs with it—the box lay in the lumber- room, and would never travel with its boy master more. The clocks began to preach iad sermons, and the rats to skelter up and down, for rats affect your quiet houses. His bedroom was locked up, and only entered by the mother, who went in there often and sat alone, nursing her grief. The poor lady of the house pined away day after day, longing and longing for her son—the son that would never, never come. Aged, broken-up Uncle John spun on his bruised thread of life, wishing to have done with it; and, next to the bereaved mother I have spoken of, I know of no sadder sight than an old, noble, honest gentleman, whose only boy hope has gone.
